What are plate heat exchangers?

The plate heat exchanger was invented by Richard Seligman in 1923. It is more efficient than plate and frame heat exchanger and flat plate heat exchanger. Under the same workload/capacity, they are also much more compact than the shell and tube structure. They are usually used on ships to exchange heat with seawater.
They consist of a number of corrugated steel plates (other materials have also been used) supported on two centrally placed carrier rails. There are tie rods along the perimeter of the heat exchanger . The number of plates can be adjusted at any time by simply opening the setup and adding or removing new plates. In recent times, detachable plates have also been used. These offer a distinct advantage because of their strength which allows the plate to be much thinner thus allowing better heat transfer. The use of titanium makes the plates stronger and more durable which allows fluids at a higher pressure to be used in the heat exchanger.
